BACKGROUND ON LLANWRTYD WELLS
Llanwrtyd Wells is in the heart of Mid Wales and is officially the smallest town in Great Britain. The town lies at the centre of one of the last remaining wildernesses with the cleanest air in these Islands. The River Irfon, a tributary of the River Wye flows through the town and salmon return to spawn yearly. Llanwrtyd Wells is bounded by spectacular scenery; forests; mountains and hidden valleys protecting many rare species of flora and fauna, including the breathtaking Red Kite which soars wild and free over the town. ![]() The town is known for its unusual events. The World Bog Snorkelling Champ ship which takes place in a 50 yard by 4 feet deep trench cut through peat bog. Entrants, equipped with snorkel and flippers, need to complete two lengths of the bog without the aid of conventional swimming strokes. Other events include a man v horse sprint - a 22 mile marathon through some of the finest scenery in Mid Wales which Commenced in 1980 - the Mid Wales Real Ale Beer Festival, Gourmet Food Festival and many more throughout the year.
